Large unauthorized car meet prompts enforcement near Hunt Club, Barrhaven

Ottawa police, with local and provincial partners, were able to stop a number of drivers and lay charges in a one-night operation.

Officials said in a press release they conducted an enforcement blitz on April 4 in the West Hunt Club Road, Barrhaven and Riverside South areas in response to a “large unauthorized organized car meet.”

Police said that they laid a number of charges in relation to the meet-up and caught several drivers speeding well above the limit.

“While we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere,” Cst. Phil Kane, with Ottawa police’s traffic escort and enforcement unit, said. “Ottawa Police, along with OPP and RCMP, will continue targeting irresponsible and dangerous driving.”

One of the more egregious examples police noted, was a driver travelling 115 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on River Road and Mulligan Street in Riverside South. This forced officers to issue a stunt driving charge, which prompt an immediate roadside suspension, licence suspension and vehicle impound.

They also face potential fines between $2,000 and $10,000 and up to six months in jail.

Officers also caught a driver speeding 57 km/h over the limit on Hunt Club Road and Uplands Drive. This person failed to surrender their licence, resulting in an additional charge.

Some of the other charges were:

• 12 for speeding 
• 4 for improper mufflers 
• 4 for tinted windows 
• 4 for failing to surrender insurance 
• 4 for obstructed licence plates 
• 3 for unnecessary noise 
• 3 for using a handheld communication device 
• 3 for failing to stop at a red light 
• 3 for driving without a licence (unlicenced)
