Crews tackle black smoke, flames from Lowertown building

Firefighters were called to a residential building in the Lowertown neighbourhood over the weekend.

Crews received multiple 911 calls from people saying there was black smoke and flames coming from the multi-unit low-rise building. Teams arrived just after 8:39 a.m. to the 100 block of Guigues Avenue and declared a working fire on April 12.

Initiating a fast-attack crews brought a hose into the building. A separate team searched the structure for people and found none after two walk throughs.

After tackling the flames for almost an hour, firefighters declared it under control by 9:37 a.m. Fans were used to ventilate the residual smoke out of the building.

Victim serves was dispatched and an Ottawa fire services investigator was sent to the scene.
