Illegal cannabis dispensary shut down after months-long investigation

Ottawa police teamed up with a neighbourhood resource team to investigate a suspected unlicensed cannabis store in the Vanier North community.

According to a press release, police launched an investigation in February to identify cannabis dispensaries across the nation’s capital operating without a valid provincial licence. From there, officers noted there was one in the 100 block of Beechwood Avenue that was illegally selling cannabis to people.

Police and property owners issued Notices of Contravention to the operator, requesting proof of compliance with Ontario’s cannabis legislation.

“Despite these formal warnings, the business continued to operate unlawfully,” a press release notes.

On April 22, the Vanier/Overbrook Neighbourhood Resource Team executed a search warrant related to the multiple suspected offences under the Cannabis Control Act. There, officers seized wholesale quantities of marijuana, cannabis-related products, money and drug trafficking equipment.

The location is now shut down and the property is under control of the owners. Police say the case is still active and further charges are pending.

Individuals found operating illegal cannabis storefronts or businesses can be subject to fines ranging from $10,000 to $250,000 and prison time up to two years. Corporations face even higher penalties.
