People may want to give themselves a bit of extra time if they plan on visiting City Hall. Starting Monday, the city is implementing enhanced security measures.
“Over the years, security risks and incidents have evolved, resulting in various levels of government updating their security procedures for entry into their administrative and legislative centres,” the city website reads. “As a result, the City will be adopting security screening measures.”
The enhanced screening measures are akin to those in place in other public-facing government buildings, courtrooms, airports and sporting arenas. Visitors will be required to have their bags screened and walk through a metal detector. Accommodations will be made for those with disabilities of other special needs.
“The screening process will be efficient, respectful and courteous,” the city states. “Bilingual guidance and directions will be provided throughout by security personnel, as well as through signage displayed inside and outside the facility.”
To avoid any delays, visitors are asked to avoid bringing the following prohibited items:
- Sharp objects, blades or tools;
- Compressed gas cylinders, aerosol cans, or powders;
- Explosive or flammable items;
- Weapons – including toy replicas;
- Noisemakers, megaphones or air horns; and
- Large placards or signs (that are not made of cardboard or cloth).
City Hall will remain open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
