People wanted to attach big horns to car’s hood, police say ‘no’

Last week, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said some young men visited the Central Hastings Detachment seeking clarification around a “unique modification” request.

They wanted to know if they could attach a big set of horns to the hood of their sedan.

The short answer they received from an OPP sergeant was “no,” citing it was a hazard and not acceptable.

Police said the driver and passenger(s) placed the horns back in the trunk before driving off.

OPP media relations officer, Bill Dickson, told CityNews if the horns were to be attached, it “would be considered a modification that would not meet the vehicle description on the permit.”

A modification without a new permit has a set fine of $85 plus a victim surcharge.

Following an inspection, Dickson said it could make the vehicle unsafe: “A couple of bolts through the thin sheet metal of a hood could make the vehicle a danger for the driver and others.”

Safety is also a concern due to partially obscured visibility and a larger danger should the horns unattached from the car and become a projectile in the event of a collision.

Police say the horns were never mounted to the car and were glad they asked first. OPP give the individuals credit for asking if it would be an issue.
