Woman charged with arson-related offences after window explosion

Police laid arson-related charges in connection to an investigation that saw an explosion blow out an apartment building window in Ottawa’s Carlington neighbourhood over the weekend.

It happened in the early hours of July 12 in the 1100 block of Shillington Avenue. Firefighters received multiple 911 calls about the incident shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

Ottawa police told CityNews in an email that they charged a woman in her 60s with arson-related offences on Monday.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed there was debris on the ground from an explosion, and there were flames visible from one side of a multi-unit residential high-rise.

As additional resources were dispatched to the scene, firefighters began advancing a hose line within the structure. OFS says responders had to deal with hazards on the scene, including a heavy fire load.

An OC Transpo bus was dispatched to the scene to provide shelter for the residents. Air quality monitoring was established before allowing residents back inside. The fire was extinguished and contained to the area before it spread.

Ottawa Paramedic Services told CityNews that a woman in her 60s was assessed on scene and transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
