Two street racers caught going over double the limit on Hwy. 417

To end the long weekend, two teenagers were criminally charged for racing down a stretch of Highway 417.

It happened just after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday when an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer saw three vehicles barreling down the highway through a construction zone at high rates of speed. This portion of the roadway in Ottawa east is posted at 80 km/h.

Police were able to stop two of the vehicles that were travelling at more than 100 km/h over the limit. The two drivers were 18 and 19 years old, police said in a social media post.

Both were criminally charged with dangerous operation and stunt driving. Their licences were suspended for 30 days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days.

This comes after police charged another young driver over the August long weekend.

A G2 driver is facing a laundry list of consequences after being caught stunt driving on Highway 417.

It happened on the night of Aug. 1, when OPP clocked the driver travelling at 174 km/h near Moodie Drive.

Anyone convicted of stunt driving faces a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition.
