Ottawa firefighters douse early morning fire at storage unit

It was an early morning for Ottawa firefighters who say several storage units went up in flames.

OFS received the call shortly before 4:30 a.m. Saturday reporting a storage unit on fire in the 0-100 block of Bentley Ave. Firefighters say the caller was driving by the area and could see the flames emerging from one of the units.

When crews arrived on scene they reported a “large amount of black smoke” rising from the property.

The facility consisted of 24 single-storey storage units. The fire had spread to five, OFS said in a post on X.

Firefighters forced entry through the front gates to access the facility. They used axes to create openings in the affected units to insert nozzles and apply water directly to the flames.

OFS says there were construction gaps at the tops of the dividing walls which allowed the smoke and fire to spread rapidly.

The fast attack by firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading any further.

No occupants were found inside and no injuries were reported.
