Fire in university residence bathroom extinguished by Ottawa fire crews

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) didn’t wait long for the first fire of the year. It happened at a St. Paul University student residence around 10:44 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2026.

Active fire alarms were detected at 150 Hazel Street, which is a seven-storey student residence.

OFS said crews arrived on scene and located the fire alarm panel. They learned the alarm was activated on the fourth floor and made their way up using the stairwell.

A resident of one unit directed firefighters to the location of smoke and a fire in their bathroom. It was an electrical fire that sparked from the bathroom light and spread into the walls.

The fire was extinguished and contained, preventing it from spreading any further. It was declared under control 15 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene and there were no injuries.

A search of the unit was conducted to confirm nobody else was inside.

The student of the impacted unit was displaced and residence staff have arranged for alternate accommodations.
