If Colonel By Drive is part of your regular commute, you may want to give yourself some extra travel time.
Beginning Monday, the eastbound lane of Colonel By Drive, between Rosedale Avenue and the Bank Street bridge overpass, will be closed. Traffic will alternate on the open lane using automated traffic signals, according to the National Capital Commission (NCC).
The Echo Drive connection also remains closed.
The closure is necessary for work that the NCC is doing to repair the Colonel By Drive wall. The NCC says the approximately 75-year-old wall has been damaged by repeated freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads and road salt.
While the repairs are being undertaken for safety reasons and to ensure structural integrity of the wall, the NCC says the materials used will be “visually compatible with the existing aesthetic and will respect the heritage context”.
In addition to the approximately 140 m of new snow retaining wall, the project will also include a new drainage system, a new sidewalk slab and light posts, and tree planting and landscaping.
The closure is expected to remain in place until July.
