Ottawa joins the federal clean-fuel program

Council announced they will be joining the federal Clean Fuel Regulations Program on Wednesday.

The program allows municipalities to gain and sell credits for using verified clean energy which replace fossil fuels in their transportation.

Ottawa will sell credits from its Zero‑Emission Bus program and use the revenues to support electric busses. This is separate from the City’s ability to report on corporate greenhouse gas reductions which are also connected to these credits.

The City says if registered in July, the credits could generate approximately $1.3 million in revenues in 2026. This number could jump to $3.9 million by 2027 and reach $4.3 million annually once fleet busses reach 350.

There is also opportunity to invest in more programs within the e Clean Fuel Regulations market, generating revenues to fund more emission-reduction initiatives.
