Construction worker rescued after falling down 5 metres into a pit

Specially trained firefighters were sent to a construction site in the east end after a call that a worker had fallen into a deep pit.

The rope team went to the 1200 block of Hemlock Road on Tuesday afternoon in the Wateridge Village community. Ottawa police were already on scene and told fire crews that a worker had fallen from a ladder into the pit.

The team found the more than 5-metre pit and confirmed there was an injured worker at the bottom.

Officials sent a pair of firefighters down into the pit to help the worker into a Stokes basket. When they were ready to be lifted out, a crew member attached themselves to the basket, while an aerial ladder anchored the basket from outside the pit.

The worker was safely removed by 3:55 p.m. and was sent to hospital with Ottawa paramedics.
