Firefighters perform CPR on man pulled from Carlingwood blaze

One man was pulled from an apartment fire without vital signs after the first resident told crews he was inside the burning unit.
On Sunday, around 5:30 p.m., crews were called to Lockhart Avenue in Ottawa’s Carlingwood community for a multi-unit building on fire. The caller said there was heavy smoke coming from the top floor with someone trapped inside where the blaze was.
Firefighters were on scene in four minutes and heard the fire alarms and saw smoke coming from the back of the building. A man who escaped needed medical help, so the team created a space to treat him.
He told officials that someone was still stuck inside.
“Firefighters quickly entered the apartment and located the occupant with no vital signs,” the press release reads.
The man was brought outside and crews started CPR immediately. They were able to bring the man’s pulse and breathing back.
The man pulled from the blaze was sent to hospital in critical condition, along with the other man who had escaped the apartment on his own. Paramedics told CityNews that a third man, an older adult, was treated for minor smoke inhalation and was not brought to hospital.
The blaze was contained to the kitchen and was under control 20 minutes after crews arrived. Two full searches of the building were done to make sure no one else was inside.
“Our Firefighters arrived in four minutes, entered a smoke-filled apartment and rescued an occupant with no vital signs. They immediately began CPR and restored the person’s pulse and breathing while other crews brought the fire under control in less than 30 minutes. This call highlights the full scope of the life-saving work our Firefighters are trained to perform,” Nick DeFazio, public information office with Ottawa fire, said in a statement.
A team needed to check behind the stove for any fire extension and removed the smoke from the building.
Officials said that people in other apartments within the building will not be displaced. A fire investigator is looking at how the blaze started.
