Multiple teens among several charged in high-speed enforcement project

Five drivers, including two teens, were caught speeding down Ottawa roads, including in an incident where the vehicle was travelling more than double the limit.

On Oct. 23 and 24, Ottawa police were out in areas near Riverside Drive, Bronson Avenue and Bank Street enforcing speeding. In the project, they issued 55 charges, including 10 mandatory court appearances, the majority of which were for not following limits, the press release reads.

In one incident, a 19-year-old was stopped after going 135 km/h on Riverside Drive near Hunt Club Road. This was in a 60 km/h zone, police said. Also on Riverside Drive, officiers caught an 18-year-old G2 driver going 108 km/h.

On Bronson Avenue, a 21-year-old was caught going 126 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. Along the same roadway, a 35-year-old was seen going 104 km/h.

A 35-year-old was pulled over by police for going 104 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Officials say they were also charged for going 111 km/h in a 80 km/h along Bank Street as well.

All stunt drivers are facing an immediate 30-day licence suspension, a two week vehicle impound and could have significant fines and penalties if convicted.

“Excessive speed significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death in a collision. These speeds leave drivers with less time to react to changing road conditions, unexpected hazards or other road users,” officials said.
