Winterlude 2020 to include more food and ice carving

By Mike Vlasveld

As temperatures continue to drop, organizers of Winterlude are getting excited for what's to come at the 2020 winter festival.

It kicks off on January 31 with musical performances on Sparks Street and the Great Canadian Kitchen Party, which will feature the Canadian Culinary Championship.

Director of Capital Celebrations and Program Operations at Canadian Heritage Melanie Brault said Thursday, in addition to the kitchen party, festival goers will see more food featured at Winterlude locations over the course of the three-week celebration.

Brault said they will also be hosting ice-carvng competitions every weekend.

“Whereas in the past, it was all held on the first weekend and we just sort of hoped and prayed that [the sculptures] were still standing by the third weekend, this year there will be live carving every weekend.”

Hometown Hockey is coming to Winterlude 2020 on the festival's second weekend, as the 50th anniversary of the Rideau Canal Skateway is also celebrated.

Brault added that more of the national museums have come on board to offer indoor activities linked to Winterlude 2020, and another new feature will see a synthetic ice rink laid down on Bank Street.

Sparks Street was been named as the main hub for Winterlude activities on the Ottawa side in 2020.
