‘All hands on deck’ for Ottawa bylaw as officers respond to flood of calls, including Stittsville party

By Mike Vlasveld

Charges are expected to be laid in one of many weekend incidents where Ottawa residents were reportedly disregarding public health measures.

Stittsville Ward City Councillor Glen Gower says he received several messages about a house party in the Fringewood Drive neighbourhood on Saturday, April 10. In an update he issued to Twitter on Monday, Gower explains that Ottawa bylaw officers are collecting witness statements in the case and are expecting to lay charges.

The councillor says, across the city, Ottawa bylaw officers responded to more than 400 calls on Saturday night. A typical Saturday night usually includes around 160 calls.

Gower says there are more than 60 cases from the weekend that are still under investigation.

Ottawa Bylaw and Regulatory Services has been bringing on extra staff members for overtime hours to manage the surge in activity, including the need to monitor local parks.

The Stittsville councillor says Mayor Jim Watson is expected to meet with the chiefs of all Ottawa emergency services to discuss the situation.
