Pharmacists across the province are dealing with harassment over COVID-19 vaccines, according to the Ontario Pharmacists Association (OPA).
OPA CEO Justin Bates says, since the introduction of Ontario's proof-of-vaccination system, this behaviour has escalated.
“Even those who are coming in to get a first dose as a result of needing proof-of-vaccination to access certain venues and services, are doing so and in some cases, being quite resentful,” Bates told CityNews Ottawa's The Sam Laprade Show on Wednesday. “They take that frustration out on pharmacy professionals.”
Bates adds, it's not only pharmacists encountering abusive behaviour, but also hospital staff and patients. He finds these types of behaviours demoralizing and disappointing.
He says, the attitude towards those working in the healthcare sector has shifted since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“At the beginning of the pandemic, the public was banging pots and pans and showing their appreciation for healthcare providers,” Bates explained. “We've seen a shift, and I think that shift has caused some morale to decrease.”
While people do have the right do protest, Bates feels there is a limit to what is acceptable.
“Obviously, we want to make sure people are being respectful, both of the laws and each other, but when it escalates to the degree it has in some cases, it crossed the line,” he said.
Bates adds pharmacists are doing their very best to educate the public on COVID-19 vaccines, since there are many people who are hesitant with legitimate questions and concerns.
