Ahead of Wednesday's city council meeting, a handful of local organizations and Ottawa city councillors are expected to rally outside city hall to talk about issues that many transit users have experienced since the LRT's latest derailment.
Among those at Tuesday evening's rally will be Horizon Ottawa, Ottawa Transit Riders Group as well as Capital Ward City Councillor Shawn Menard. They are demanding accountability and transparency when it comes to the light rail system's problems
Horizon Ottawa's Sam Hersh tells CityNews Ottawa that he hopes that this rally will influence Wednesday's city council vote for on a judicial inquiry into the City of Ottawa's LRT contract with Rideau Transit Group.
“We hope to show that there's massive support for the motions,” says Hersh. “I think there's a clear wanting from residents to at least review the possibility of getting out of this contract.”
City staff members have advised council that the decision for judicial inquiry is expensive and that time, cost and resources are something to consider before making a decision.
The LRT has been out of service since September 19, 2021.
