The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) are bringing in a player with league experience.

Calgary native Tyrrel Tate signed with the Ottawa basketball club for the remainder of the 2022 CEBL season, the team announced on June 29.

“I am excited to join the BlackJacks organization,” said Tate in a release. “It's a team that wants to make an imprint on this league and I'm happy to be a part of it.”

This will be Tate's third year in the CEBL, and the third different organization he'll be playing for. The six-foot-five guard played his first season with the Fraser Valley Bandits in 2019, and his second season with the Guelph Nighthawks during the 2020 summer series in St. Catherines.

As a member of the Bandits, Tate averaged 13.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 19 games, making 17 starts.

“Tyrrel is an experienced player who can score the ball and give us some additional size on the perimeter,” said Jevohn Shepherd, general manager and vice-president of basketball operations for the BlackJacks. “His skill set and sizes give our roster a bit more depth and versatility.”

The Fayetteville State University alumni spent the 2017-18 campaign with the Cleveland Charge of the NBA G League. He scored a season-high 11 points, hitting two triples coming off the bench on February 10 against the Windy City Bulls.

“I am ready to get started with my teammates and staff and I want to impact the team in a winning manner,” added Tate.

With a record of three wins and seven losses through the first ten games, the BlackJacks travel to Hamilton for their sixth road game of the season on Friday, July 1 at 4 p.m.
