‘I’m certainly interested:’ Rideau-Vanier city councillor not ruling out a run for mayor in 2022

At least one Ottawa city councillor is considering a run for the city's mayoral seat in 2022.

Rideau-Vanier Ward's Mathieu Fleury was first elected councillor in 2010, beating incumbent Georges Bédard and becoming the youngest city councillor at that time. He was then re-elected in 2014 and 2018.

Now, he tells CityNews, he could make a run for mayor.

“There'll be tough decisions and interesting decisions, I guess, for all of us [around the council table] I expect this fall, for most. But we'll see where that leads me. I haven't made up my mind but I certainly am interested.”

“We're coming out of a pandemic with vaccinations. I'm interested, but I'm considering options at this point,” says Fleury.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson still hasn't revealed whether or not he will be running for re-election. He said Tuesday that he's still “50-50” on the matter.

Former Ottawa area MPP Bob Chiarelli has already announced his bid to become the next mayor in 2022.

Residents in the capital region will be heading to the polls a lot in the next year or so, with the federal election in September 2021, Gatineau's municipal election in November, followed by Ottawa's municipal election and a provincial election next year.
