Fire rips through gas station garage on Cyrville Road

By CityNews Ottawa

A major fire badly damaged the mechanic’s garage of a gas station in Ottawa’s east end.

Firefighters were called to the gas station, on Cyrville Road near St. Laurent Boulevard, around 10:21 a.m., Monday.

The fire started in the gas station’s auto repair garage, which contained very flammable materials like tires, automobile fluids and propane. There were also two vehicles up on the garage’s hoists.

Damage from the fire is so severe, the Ottawa Fire Service said the hoists were the only thing that prevented the building’s roof from fully collapsing.

The fire service’s Hazardous Materials team used booms and absorbent material to prevent water runoff from the fire, which contained automotive products, from entering the sewer system.

The blaze was brought under control, and an Ottawa Fire Service spokesperson says no one was hurt. Firefighters will remain at the scene, in case there are any flare-ups.

A fire investigator has been sent to the fire scene to look into the cause.

Ottawa police were asking people to avoid the Cyrville and St-Laurent area around the scene of the fire.

This is the tenth fire in Ottawa since midnight on Friday.
