OFS rescue kayakers two kayakers near Deschênes Rapids

By CityNews Ottawa staff

Ottawa firefighters helped a pair of kayakers who were calling for help after getting too close to the Deschênes Rapids on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) said it received a 9-1-1 call just after 6:45 p.m. on Saturday evening reporting two kayakers who were calling for help and trying to to go through the Deschênes rapids near Cassels Street.

The kayakers tried to paddle in the opposite direction of the rapids and one kayaker managed to make their way towards one of the OFS water rescue teams. The second kayaker capsized, went through the rapids and was picked up by a second water rescue team further downstream.

The two kayakers were rescued at 7:11 p.m.
