Multiple vehicles and trailer containing tires catch fire forcing thick black smoke into the air

Large plumes of black smoke were seen in the distance from Hunt Club Road near the Airport Parkway as crews battled a two-alarm fire at a business on Tuesday.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 2:20 p.m. and confirmed multiple vehicles were on fire close to an auto repair shop.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) say firefighters started a “fast attack” but were soon evacuated from the area as live hydro wires caught fire and fell to the ground.

Just four minutes after OFS’ arrival, a second alarm was declared prompting additional resources. Hydro crews arrived to shut the power off allowing the firefighters to tackle the blaze around the downed wires.

The fire spread to a 45-foot trailer full of tires. The HazMat team was then dispatched to ensure water used to extinguish the fire didn’t enter the city’s sewer system.

After a foam truck was used to help put the fire out, it was declared under control just before 3:00 p.m.

Ottawa fire tells CityNews the structure of the business was unharmed and there were no reported injuries.

Due to the high level of hydrocarbons and carcinogens, the HazMat team was needed to clean fire crews’ personal protective gear.
