Over the long weekend, the Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) pulled over a vehicle for speeding at 137km/h on Highway 417.
While the vehicle seats five people, it contained seven occupants including four children, said police in an X post. OPP discovered an 18-month-old child seated on the front passenger’s lap, and two children in the backseat — ages six and eight — sharing one seatbelt.
The driver was fined $997 and a taxi was called to transport some of the passengers home.
Prior to this incident, OPP stopped a vehicle traveling at 145 km/h, with a one-year-old in a booster seat.
Following several alarming incidents, OPP is calling on motorists to prioritize safe driving.
On Monday evening, Ottawa OPP stopped two motorists for stunt driving on Highway 417 in the city’s west end.
According to police, both drivers were given 30-day DL suspensions and 14-day vehicle impounds —facing a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points, and a one-year driving prohibition upon conviction.
Officials are reminding drivers to slow down and drive safe, in efforts to prevent accidents and save lives.
