1 flown to hospital after crash with construction vehicle on Hwy. 416; charges laid

One male was flown to the hospital in serious condition after a vehicle struck the rear end of a crash truck that was on Highway 416 Tuesday morning.

Police responded at 9:08 a.m. Officers closed both lanes travelling south from Fallowfield Road to Bankfield Road due to the incident.

“The driver saw it (crash truck) last second and tried to avoid it unsuccessfully,” Michael Fathi, media relations officer with Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), said.

The crash truck was on the highway to protect construction workers who were working on the southbound lanes near the Fallowfield Road exit. Police say this is the second time in less than a week that a construction truck has been rear-ended.

The at-fault driver was charged with careless driving and is facing a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.

The driver of the construction vehicle was transported to hospital in stable condition, paramedics told CityNews. The crash did not prompt the technical collision investigators to be called, Fathi said.

All lanes opened on Highway 416 two hours later.
