Woman in her 50s dead after visible smoke from Vanier apartment

Ottawa fire, police and paramedics responded to a call Thursday evening in Vanier where a woman in her 50s has died.

According to fire media relations officer, Nick DeFazio, when crews arrived on scene there were no visible flames from the small multi-unit apartment building in the 100 block of Deschamps Avenue.

Firefighters were called originally for “visible smoke” which triggers an automatic two-truck response. Once inside the building, just after 9:00 p.m., crews found one woman in the first-floor bedroom with no vital signs.

Officials pulled her out into the hall and started CPR before Ottawa paramedics took over.

Police noted in a social media post on Friday morning that the woman had succumbed to her injuries.

DeFazio said that crews did not need to extinguish any flames.

The cause of the smoke and the woman’s death is still under investigation but police say that her death is not suspicious.

Ottawa fire and police are conducting a joint investigation with the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner.
