The roof to the home ended up collapsing in what was nearly a five hour effort to control the fire.

A neighbour called 911 on Tuesday night as a home on their street was engulfed in flames.

It happened 9:28 p.m. and the neighbour told fire dispatch they could see smoke and flames coming from a single-family home in the 1800 block of Donald B Munro Drive in Carp. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the centre of the house and the outside.

This part of the city does not have fire hydrants, so crews set up a shuttle system with trucks to bring water in from a nearby source. By the time they arrived, the house was already engulfed, forcing teams to battle the flames from the outside.

Officials had to consider that a collapse of the building was imminent, which adjusted their fighting efforts.

By 2:02 a.m. Wednesday morning, the fire was declared under control. By 4:30 a.m. the roof collapsed forcing crews to tape off other zones avoiding them.

An excavator was sent to the scene to sift through the rubble, allowing firefighters to extinguish hot spots.

They remain on scene with a fire investigator as of mid-morning.
