Two collisions on Hwy. 417 cause early morning chaos

Police have laid careless driving charges after a couple of collisions in Ottawa on Tuesday morning.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, officers were on scene at two crashes on Highway 417, one happened at Bronson Avenue and the other at Terry Fox Road.

One of the crashes involved an SUV and a dump truck. The other was a transport truck that appears to have collided with a construction barrier, photos from police show.

In one of the collisions a driver was sent to hospital with minor injuries.

Both the people charged in the separate incidents are facing careless driving charges, which comes with a $490 fine and three demerit points. Due to the incidents, lanes on the highway were reduced to allow the vehicles to be removed.

“We know driving through Ottawa highways is slow at best of times due to ongoing construction, but please slow down and give first responders and tow truck operators space to work,” OPP said in a post on X.

Police have said that distracted driving accounts for the majority of avoidable collisions.
