Police crackdown on car meets in Ottawa, laying many charges

Ottawa police conducted an enforcement blitz on two car meets in the city, laying many charges, then headed to downtown to screen over 200 vehicles.
This is a part of the Residents Matter initiative that police have been conducting for well over the last year across the municipality in an effort to curb illegal behaviour on roads in communities at night.
In the latest crackdown on May 23, officers issued 24 charges at two car meets, one near Merivale Road/Meadowlands Drive, in Nepean, and the other on Strandherd Drive, in Barrhaven.
After attending the meets, police headed to Sussex Drive and King Edward Avenue where 250 vehicles were screened as they left the ByWard Market.
One specific incident involved a G1 driver who was alone in the vehicle, without insurance and while under a licence suspension. Another driver was charged with driving with a suspended licence.
As a result police charged people with:
- Mandatory alcohol screening – 7 drivers
- Approved screening device – 3 drivers
- Speeding – 2 drivers
- Cell phone – 1 driver
- No/improper muffler – 2 drivers
- Use plates not authorized for vehicle – 2 drivers
- Entire plate not plainly visible – 2 drivers
- Fail to surrender insurance card – 3 drivers
- Fail to surrender permit – 1 driver
- G1 driver unaccompanied by qualified driver – 1 driver
“Residents are encouraged to report traffic-related concerns online at ottawapolice.ca/report,” officials said.
