Ottawa Fire Services says its Water Rescue Teams helped a paddleboarder in distress early Friday afternoon.

It happened around 1:15 p.m. when OFS received a call from Gatineau Fire Services about an individual in distress near Deschênes Rapids. Gatineau Fore Services said the individual appeared to be struggling and was not wearing a personal flotation device.

Upon arrival, the Water Rescue Team immediately launched a rescue boat and began searching the area.

OFS says the paddleboarder was quickly located after having fallen into the rapids.

The individual was safely rescued and brought aboard the rescue boat at 1:45 p.m. and was returned to shore at Britannia Beach.

The paddleboarder did not sustain any injuries.

OFS is taking the opportunity to remind people of the importance of always wearing a personal flotation device.

Deschênes Rapids is a popular water destination but is also a common spot for water rescue calls.
