Federal government boosts portion of huge Rideau-Rockcliffe development

The federal government is giving a huge boost to an east end project that will see hundreds of new homes built in a dense new community.

Through the Apartment Construction Loan Program, the highest level of government is investing over $45 million to help support the construction of 121 rental homes. It is just one of several phases that the developers, Bayview Group, will create in Rockcliffe.

Located near the Rockcliffe Airport and tucked between Manor Park and Rothwell Heights, east of downtown Ottawa, the area is primed for several different housing and park projects.

The specific development the government is investing in will be at 375 Codd’s Rd. and will be a six-storey building with parking and a 24/7 fitness centre with outdoor amenities. It will be a mix of studio, one, two and one-bedroom plus den units.

“I want to thank the federal government and the Bayview Group for their leadership and partnership in making this project a reality,” Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said in the press release. “These 121 new rental homes are an important step toward addressing Ottawa’s housing needs. This is another great example of how working together across all levels of government and with private partners can help us build more affordable, sustainable housing.”

The program boosting the project gives developers repayable low-interest loans for building units for middle-class Canadians.

There are several other projects on the go in the future community, a part of Wateridge Village, including a facility for meetings, change rooms for skating and an area to host events. Mattamy Homes has some townhomes and condos in development, Rohit Group is building an 89-unit apartment building and another housing unit, among several others.
