A routine traffic stop by Ottawa police led to an arrest and several charges for a driver after illegal substances were found.
Officers were in the Vanier and Overbrook neighbourhoods looking for Highway Traffic Act offences; instead, for one driver, they laid Criminal Code Charges. It happened around 9:07 p.m., and when police stopped the vehicle, they saw what they believed was an illicit substance.
Officials arrested the driver for drug possession and found several other things in their search. According to the press release, the vehicle was carrying a large quantity of crack cocaine, cocaine, oxycodone pills, Canadian currency and a firearm.
The driver is facing several charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession, police said. He was held for a bail hearing.
Investigators from the guns and gangs unit are continuing the case.
This comes just as two men were busted for fraud and drug-related charges on Sept. 11.
Members of the South Neighbourhood Resource Team and the Traffic Escort and Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic stop in the Barrhaven area in the late morning.
Police say officers detected the odour of cannabis and proceeded to conduct a search of the vehicle.
Police seized a quantity of cannabis, but also found counterfeit passports, numerous bank and credit cards, banking documents — including fraudulent documents — and a point-of-sale machine.
