Wrong-way, impaired driver collides with other vehicle on Hwy. 417

A slew of charges were laid against a 32-year-old in relation to an incident of a wrong-way driver on Highway 417 in Ottawa’s west end.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a man from the nation’s capital was driving just before 11:00 p.m. on Oct. 19 along the throughway near Panmure Road, a rural portion of the highway near Carp. Police said they received multiple reports of a vehicle travelling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

As a result, the driver crashed into another motorist, who officials say suffered minor injuries as a result.

Responding officers suspected the wrong-way driver was impaired by alcohol and a roadside screening device was used. After further testing at the detachment, police determined he had registered more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit.

As a result, Colin Quin is facing offences of:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation
  • Fail to stop after accident
  • Drive wrong way – divided highway
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit
  • Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor

His driver’s licence is suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle is impounded for a week.

Quin is set to appear in an Ottawa court at a later date.

“The OPP would like to thank all individuals who continue to report impaired drivers,” police said in a press release.
