Ottawa fire’s structural collapse team responded to the city’s south end after a vehicle plowed into the front of a business.
According to teams, they were called around 1:49 p.m. on Thursday to the 5500 block of Manotick Main Street. They confirmed a two-vehicle collision happened, with a minivan leaving the road and crashing through the front of a two-storey century home. Photos from the scene show heavy snow falling on crews while they address the situation.
Firefighters said the building housed a business on the ground floor and a residence above.
The vehicle caused “significant” damage to the front, officials said, since it pushed part of the front wall inward and compromised the structure. Both drivers were able to escape their vehicles.
Crews first cleared the inside of the business to allow the team to do its work installing emergency shoring. A stabilization system was built, including a T-shore in the basement beneath the impacted area and a post extending from the main floor to the second floor. This allowed the weight from the upper floor to lean on the ground.
Police were needed to close the surrounding roads to make sure firefighters could complete the work.
When the building was stabilized the vehicle was removed. Firefighters said that due to quick work, the second-floor tenants were not displaced.
