Philippine law professor shows anti-Islam film to students during discussion of Bill of Rights

MANILA, Philippines – A law professor has defied a ban by Philippine university officials and shown students an anti-Islam video that sparked violent protests in other countries.

The constitutional law students saw the 14-minute trailer of “Innocence of Muslims” late Friday. Student Gino Paje says it was important that their professor “stood his ground” to assert freedom of expression.

Professor Harry Roque says the film was “trash and nothing but trash” and will not convince people Islam is evil.

University of the Philippines Chancellor Cesar Saloma banned showing the film on campus until its “full value” was established.

Former law dean Raul Pangalangan says Roque’s showing of the film was timely for the course on the Bill of Rights. The lesson covered the Philippine version and the U.S. amendments on which it’s based.
