OTTAWA, ON — Frustration is growing among aspiring elementary teachers with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. Due to new rules adopted by the board this year, occasional teachers are having a hard time getting any part-time work.
The board capped its occasional teachers list at about 1,700 compared to more than 2,000 last spring.
some prospective elementary teachers have been told the list won’t open for at least two to three more years.
One of the problems, according to the Ottawa Sun, is that one in five positions on the list is held by retiring teachers who are allowed to work 95 days a year before it affects their pensions. That number has been cut down to 50 days for the 2100/2012 school year.
