New Police Services Board meets for the first time Monday night

Ottawa’s Police Services Board will meet Monday night for the first time its newly appointed members. They will have a full agenda as they prepare to discuss a number of high profile issues surrounding the Police Service.

Scandal has been swirling around the Ottawa Police Service since a judge released the cellblock video of Stacy Bonds in November. She is now suing the Ottawa Police Service for $1.2 million for violation of her charter rights.

As soon as the Bonds video saw the light of day, a number of other people came forward to complain about similar treatment. The Board will be discussing a number of investigations into alleged prisoner abuse and will be looking for approval to have the OPP probe those allegations.

Other changes at the Police Service include the hiring of a public relations firm to provide strategic communications advice. As well, the force has announced that they will be adding audio to the video surveillance in the cellblock and a staff sergeant is being moved into the cellblock to oversee operations.

Meanwhile, one Ottawa police officer is denying all allegations against him in connection to an arrest in July 2007. In that case, a woman complained that she was sexually assaulted in the cellblock.  The Citizen reports her case was just about to be settled out of court, but now the Police Service is set to defend itself at trial early in the new year.
