Gowns once worn by Princess Diana to go up for auction

Designer gowns once worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, are heading to the auction block in Toronto Thursday night.

The 14 evening dresses are up for sale to the highest bidder at Auction House Waddington’s.

The collection is owned by American Maureen Rorech Dunkel.

The Florida resident originally purchased 12 of the gowns anonymously at a Christie’s Auction in New York.

She bought the dresses just eight weeks before diana was killed in a 1997 car accident in Paris at the age of 36.

An additional two dresses were later donated to the collection.

Dunkel says she paid $870 Thousand U.S. for some of the late princess’s most well-known evening gowns.

Several of them were worn for state visits and dinners.

Waddington’s is donating a portion of its commission from the Toronto auction to Canada’s National Ballet School as a tribute to Diana’s passion for both kids and ballet.
