The Governor General heads North

OTTAWA – Governor General David Johnston and his wife Sharon head to Nunavut on Monday on their first official visit to the Arctic as the vice-regal couple.
It marks the first time a governor general will visit two isolated and traditional communities due north of Hudson’s Bay: Kugaaruk and Qikiqtarjuaq. The latter is known for icebergs, traditional sealskin wear, and the other (Kugaaruk) recorded the coldest wind chill ever in Canada — minus 78degrees celcius in January, 1975.
The seven-day trek also includes a hockey game in Iqaluit and watching military training exercises called Operation Nanook in Resolute Bay. Johnston, a former law professor, will also tour the Nunavut Research Institute in Igloolik and visit an ancient Inuit Thule site in Repulse Bay.
