OTTAWA – The Ottawa 67’s kicked off the preseason with a controversial win over Patrick Roy’s Quebec Remparts in a fight filled affair.
The official final score gave the 67’s a 3-2 victory. After a scoreless first period, Mikhail Grigorenko of the Remparts opened the scoring in the second with his first goal of the evening. Ottawa hit the ice on a mission as the puck dropped to start the third period however, as they quickly erased the one goal deficit with tallies by Dalton Smith and Taylor Fielding before Sean Monahan netted the eventual game winner to cap off the 67’s three goal run in less than seven minutes.
The Quebec team appeared to score the tying goal following Grigorenko’s second goal the night, however officials immediately waved it off. Refusing to acknowledge the call, Roy later told the Ottawa Citizen “It was a good game and to get a tie against a good team like that shows us that we have a certain amount of talent. They’re going to (do) good things this year, and to compete with them like we did, for sure we’re happy.”
Despite a punishment of an automatic game misconduct for fighting in the preseason, multiple tilts resulted in each team losing five players as tempers boiled over. Ottawa coach and GM Chris Byrne told the Citizen “There was a lot of pushing, fighting and wrestling, but I don’t think it was a dirty game” downplaying the physicality of the inter-provincial contest..
The 67’s continue their preseason in Belleville Wednesday night against the Bulls.
