U.S. Postal Service to close over 2-hundred mail processing centres

The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service plans close 252 mail processing centres and slow first-class delivery next spring.

It cites steadily declining mail volume as the reason.

Postal vice-president David Williams says the agency wants to virtually eliminate the chance for stamped letters to arrive the next day to help avert possible bankruptcy next year.

Williams says the postal service must respond to new market realities in which people are turning more to the Internet for email communications and bill payment.

After reaching a peak in 2006, first-class mail volume in the U-S is now at 78 million and is expected to drop to half that by 2020.
