Deadly year for Outaouais motorists

2011 has proved to be the deadliest on Outaouais highways in nearly two decades.

Sixteen people were killed on the dark and twisting, two-lane roads.

The number if people killed in traffic incidents is up from five in 2010, and the MRC-des-Collines police maintain several of those deaths could have bee prevented.

They were the result of speeding drivers not adjusting properly to road conditions, failing to yield, or passing illegally.

With these dark and twisting road that fact comes as no surprise.

One Aylmer resident told 1310News not only are the roads daunting, the drivers are too.

“Because people drive like fools, that’s why,” he said.  “They’re always in a hurry. It’s terrible. They cut you off. It’s unreal, the way they drive around here… before I had my car, I used to wait for my boss to pick me up and eight out of 10 card never made their stop, they just went through the stop signs. It’s unbelievable.”

Others said they see drivers pass on double lines and roll through red lights on these roads and that young drivers should have more practice before getting behind the wheel alone.

“The people drive a bit too fast,” said another man. “We travel down to Ottawa every day, five days a week, and we know the traffic is terrible. They’re passing on double lines, on hills and really they should slow down.”

In December, three people were killed, including a father and his young son, when a driver tried to pass their truck on a double line on a curve.

Others people point the finger at impaired drivers, including one in April, where police were chasing a man suspected of drunk driving.
