CALGARY – Prime Minister Stephen Harper thinks Calgary is Canada’s greatest city.
The comments came in an unscripted moment during his annual stampede BBQ, on Friday.
“I think that if the [Stampede’s] founders could be here today and see the great city, see what has built up around this event, they would be amazed. They would be amazed to see that their Stampede has been part of giving birth to the greatest city in the greatest country in the world,” Harper said.
Some critics and politicians have come out against Harper’s comments, while others have opted to support their own cities.
Meanwhile, Harper is standing by his comments. In an email to 1310News, the Prime Minister’s Office wrote:
“The Prime Minister’s hometown is Calgary, it is natural for the Prime Minister to call his hometown the greatest city, isn’t it?”
The Prime Minister was born in Toronto but moved to Calgary in his 20’s- where his federal riding is now located.
