Crowds throng to Spencerville’s first Stampede

The Spencerville Fairgrounds were swarming with cowboys and cowgirls on Saturday afternoon, for the first annual Spencerville Stampede.

Over 1500 people, the majority wearing cowboy hats, gathered to watch professional bareback, bull and saddle bronc riders.

Competitors also went head-to-head in the steer wrestling, roping, and barrel racing events.

Organizer Cora Beking says she worked very hard to bring the rodeo to town because she knew the community would love it.

“There’s real country people in this community and in this part of the country,” she says.

Sandra Gabriel competed in break-away roping with her husband and says she enjoys spending time in the “cowboy community.”

“We know everyone,” she says. We’re like another world but it’s really fun.”

One of the most popular attractions was the “Wild Thing”, a mechanical bull for budding cowboys to test their skills.

The stampede also features a vendor village and an antique car and tractor show.
