String of distraction thefts in Ottawa could be part of multimillion-dollar theft ring

OTTAWA-Ottawa Police are working with the Durham Detachment and other police services across Ontario on what they believe is an international Romanian organized theft ring.

The distraction thefts are typically aimed at seniors who are robbed of credit cards, debit cards and jewelery.

The Sun reports, sixty thefts throughout the capital have been linked to the ring. police believe 150 other cases in the province are connected too.

Thirty-four arrests have been made and more than 250 charges laid so far.

Police have identified over 400 people with the organized thefts.

$85-thousand worth of cash and stolen merchandise has been recovered by police.

Over a million dollars in suspicious overseas wire transfers have been identified.
