Ottawa’s Indo-Canadian community looking for support as COVID-19 wreaks havoc overseas

Ottawa's Indo-Canadian Community Centre (ICCC) is looking to raise $100,000 to support communities in India, at a time when the country's COVID-19 situation continues to worsen.

Ken Talwar says nearly every one he has talked to in India is being affected by skyrocketing COVID-19 cases and deaths in the country.

“Relatives, friends, so on and so forth. Even in my own family; one of my cousins has passed away and [in] my sister's family, they're all COVID-positive right now.”

As of Monday, May 3, the ICCC had raised $90,000 for its India COVID-19 relief fund.

“Collect funds or make arrangements for any equipment,” the ICCC president says of ways to help India's novel coronavirus situation. “[For example:] Health related equipment such as oxygen cylinders, concentrators [and] diagnostic equipment, whether it's oxy-meters or digital thermometers and so on.”

Sending criticial equipment is a bit more complicated, Talwar says, so he thinks raising money is the best and easiest way for Ottawans to help.
