Canadian Museum of History set to reopen next week

By Mike Vlasveld

As COVID-19 restrictions lift in Gatineau next week, the Canadian Museum of History is getting set to reopen to the public.

It will be welcoming visitors back as of 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 10, and plans to be open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (and until 7 p.m. on Thursdays).

The museum says most of its exhibitions will be open, with physical distancing and safety measures in place. There will be directional signage and other temporary restrictions indoors.

Timed admissions must be booked online ahead of time, as well. Tickets become available on Friday, February 5.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the Grand Hall, including:

  • The Canadian History Hall — a large and comprehensive exhibition on the history of Canada; the Canadian Stamp Collection, which highlights every stamp issued in Canada;
  • The First Peoples Hall, which celebrates the history and diversity of the Indigenous peoples of Canada;
  • The special display, highlights from the Rick Hansen Man In Motion World Tour Collection, which explores how teamwork and public support can inspire global change;
  • And UNCEDED — Voices of the Land, a multimedia installation that brings together the past, present and future of the Indigenous experience, as seen through the eyes and minds of 18 distinguished Indigenous architects and designers from across Turtle Island (North America).

Due to its highly interactive experience, the Canadian Children’s Museum will remain temporarily closed. The CINÉ+, Panorama Café, Bistro Boréal and Second Cup will also be closed.

Vending machines featuring snacks and cold beverages will be available, and for the time being, the gift shop will only be open on the weekends.

The history museum's sister institution, the Canadian War Museum, remains closed until further notice due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or not feeling well, is asked to postpone their visit until they are feeling better.
