Candidates for municipal election must file papers by Friday afternoon

By Jenn Pritchard

The deadline to file papers for the 2018 municipal election is at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Those still looking to join the race for mayor, councillor or school board trustee must ensure they have their filing fee and 25 signatures before showing up at the city's election office on Cyrville Road.

According to the city's Manager of Legislative Services, they've seen fewer candidates add their names to the ballot this year than in the previous election

This year, there have been just over 170 people sign up to run compared to 217 in 2014. This includes 15 candidates in Orleans, 10 candidates for mayor and just one candidate in Beacon-Hill Cyrville, Tim Tierney.

Many of those signed up are running for the first time and the election office will be there to help out along the way.

An information session is being held on August 8th that will explain the rules surrounding election signs, campaign finances and voters lists.
