Carling Avenue named Ottawa’s worst road

By Jason White

The votes have been tallied up and drivers have once again named Carling Avenue the worst road in Ottawa, in CAA's Worst Roads campaign.

This is the second consecutive year that Carling Avenue has topped the Ottawa list, and the second consecutive year that Hunt Club Road and Mitch Owens Road have appeared in Ottawa's top five.

“Far and away, the most votes are concerned about potholes and the condition of the pavement, because it's mostly drivers,” said Mandy Chepeka, CAA Northern and Eastern Ontario. “We offer them other choices, like is there cycling infrastructure, are there sidewalks, is it unsafe.”

Despite a long winter that left many roads in rough shape, none of Ottawa's roads got enough votes to crack the provincial top ten.

County Road 49 in Prince Edward County was deemed the worst road in eastern Ontario, and ranked fourth on the provincial list.

“The Toronto area has a larger population, so if people put their mind to it, they could…tell their neighbours [and] co-workers, 'Hey, vote for this road,'” Chepeka told 1310 NEWS.

The CAA will now use these lists to urge politicians to direct funding into improving the specific roads named by drivers in its Worst Roads campaign.
