By Mike Vlasveld

Ottawa fire investigators are on the scene of an apartment blaze on Cummings Avenue, just south of Montreal Road.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 9-1-1 call at 1:26 p.m., reporting smoke coming from the door and windows of an apartment at 640 Cummings Ave. The caller was unsure if anyone was home.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 1:29 p.m. and confirmed a working fire with black smoke coming from an apartment window. They then forced their way through the locked door of the apartment to be faced with heavy smoke and flames.

Firefighters searched the unit, rescuing a cat and confirming no residents were in the unit at the time of the fire.

The main body of the fire was knocked down and declared under control at 1:39 p.m.

OFS officials say building staff are assisting residents.

A cause and damage estimate have yet to be determined.
